Paper 1 Question

Hi everyone! For paper one I wanted to focus on Twilight, and here is the question I came up with.

In the film, Twilight, Edward consistently tells Bella that he is going to kill her but she refuses to stay away from him. What does this say about the filmmakers view of young women today?

Your advice is appreciated :)

  1. Hello, here are some suggestions:
I do think your question is significant, analytical, and clear, but I do not think it is specific. If you're trying to portray the perspectives of the filmmakers in regards to young women today, I would use a different example. Instead of focusing on Edward trying to kill Bella, pick a particular scene and talk about how Bella is portrayed as desperate, and too selfless. Your idea is great, maybe just a little rewording. Hope this helps!

  2. I think the question is a good start but agree with Lauren that it needs to focus on specific scenes. Maybe you could even do a comparison of two different scenes in the movie. Also, maybe not just what does this say about the filmmakers view of young women today, but societies (after all, the film was pretty successful).

    Hope this helps :)

  3. I agree with both Lauren and Megan. I think it's a good start, but I would point out a specific scene in which you can talk about. And yes, I would talk about how Bella was portrayed in the particular scene where Edward tells Bella he's going to kill her, more analytical. See you Monday :)

  5. Hi Ashleigh,

As your group members have said, this is a sound beginning, and you've chosen a specific aspect of the film to address. Right now, however, I'm not sure what is at stake for you in the question. It seems that what this question is ultimately about is the nature of Bella's attraction to Edward, as well as the ensuing social implications of the film's depiction of female desire. Am I reading your interests correctly? If I were you, therefore, I would follow your peers' advice and choose a scene or two that allows you to comment in depth on the way Bella's desire is being portrayed. It may indeed be a scene in which Edward warns Bella away - but you could focus on various aspects of the scene to draw out your analysis. Look not only at dialogue but also at the mise-en-scene (setting, costumes, the actors' expressions and line delivery, lighting, etc.) and the cinematography (camera angles, focus, duration of shot, music, etc.)

FYI: The film is still on reserve in the library if you would like to take a closer look at it.
